iodineIodine is a trace mineral used to synthesize hormones and is very important to how hormones function at the receptor site. Iodine is mainly found in the thyroid tissue and is vital to the human body. Every cell needs iodine to function.

Deficient iodine can result in physical, neurological, mental, immune and reproductive disease. It has been proven that iodine deficiency can lead to the development of ovarian cysts and fibrocystic breast disease. Iodine works to destroy cells that may be harmful to the system, like cancer cells.

In the 1980s, there was a fear that people were consuming too much iodine so without any documented evidence, iodine was removed from the baking process and was replaced with bromine (which can also be found in fire extinguishers and is toxic to the body). Many of the processed food items we eat today contain these toxins which are used as preservatives. Iodine detoxifies the body by removing mercury, fluorides, chlorides, and bromides.

The World Health Organization recommends a daily allowance of 150mcg of iodine. (1000mcg equals 1mg). WHO declares that iodine deficiency is the largest single cause of mental retardation.

Researchers found that supplementing with Iodine therapy ranging from 12.5 – 50mg daily led to reversal of fibrocystic disease, improvement of fibromyalgia and cessation of migraine headaches. Diabetics required less insulin and hypothyroid patients required less thyroid medication. The Japanese consume an average of 13.8 mg of iodine daily and have the lowest incidence of breast cancer in the world.

What is DIM?

dimDiindolylmethane is a plant compound with healthy promoting properties found in cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. DIM promotes beneficial estrogen metabolism and reduces the levels of undesirable or "bad" estrogen metabolites that are responsible for many of estrogens undesirable actions, including further weight gain, breast cancer and uterine cancer in women. In men, these metabolites contribute to weight gain and prostate cancer.

Research as shown that DIM has the ability to act as an estrogen balancer in both women and men. In women, inappropriate metabolism of estrogen can result in weight gain (waist, thighs, hips), irritability, and breast tenderness. DIM can be used by women addressing conditions like uterine fibroid tumors and fibrocystic breast disease.

Men may suffer with midsection weight gain, loss of sex drive, prostate abnormalities, and other health issues. DIM helps to eliminate active estrogen from the male body by promoting its conversion into the "good" metabolites. These metabolites then free up testosterone by bumping it off the testosterone-binding proteins. The end result is a healthier balance of testosterone to estrogen and more free testosterone circulating in the body.

In scientific studies, high levels of testosterone and low levels of estrogen have been linked to lean body mass, an efficient fat-burning metabolism, and low abdominal obesity. Other benefits from testosterone are improved mood, more interest in sex, and better physical conditioning.

Supplementing with DIM provides the amounts of indoles equivalent to eating 3 pounds of broccoli per day and can effectively shift the balance of sex hormones. "An optimal estrogen balance has implications for cancer prevention and successful aging in both women and men," according to Dr. Michael Zeligs, M.D., co-author of the All About DIM book.
